Good morning,

Growth investors bought the dip but it keeps on dipping, value stocks are ripping, bond yields are booming, bank stocks are cruising, Toyota passed GM as America's #1 automaker, everyone is quitting their jobs, Evergrande has more bad news, Monkey JPGs hit $1B in sales, and Ford plans to double production for electric trucks ⚡️

In case you missed it, we released the inaugural episode of our podcast, Big Swinging Decks, last night. Listen to Mark and I talk about all things finance, memes, and the future of Litquidity on Apple Music and Spotify 🤝

2022 is off to a hot start.

Let's dive in.

Markets

  • A rise in interest rates caused mixed sentiments in equity markets yesterday, with the Dow closing in the green for a second straight session to start 2022 while the tech-heavy Nasdaq shed 1.3%

  • The hot start to the year in the bond market is now highlighted by the fastest treasury yield growth in 20 years, with the 10-year treasury yield hitting an intraday high of 1.71%

    • Remember that when bond yields rise, shares of tech companies tend to drop since their future cash flows become effectively worth less today

  • Both reopening stocks, which shrugged off rising daily case numbers, and bank stocks, which benefit from higher interest rates, moved in the opposite direction and posted gains on Tuesday

A Message From Masterworks

WINTER IS COMING

Brethren of House Lit,

The Long Night is upon us. The Fed has signaled that interest rates will rise soon. It’s been 18 years since the last full cycle of rate hikes.

If you don’t recall the olden days of 2004 this is what happens:

  • Borrowing money becomes more expensive

  • Stonk earnings decrease

  • LESS GAINS

But don’t be afraid, you just have to diversify your portfolio with assets outside of the stock market to prepare for the Long Night. And my squire Karl and I found an alternative asset that fits the bill: Blue-chip Art

Here's My Thesis:

  • UBS reports two-thirds of high-net-worth collectors are buying art for an expected ROI

  • Real assets like art appreciate well during periods of high inflation

  • Blue-chip Art prices outpaced the S&P 500 from 1995 to 2021, according to Citi

In fact, my New Year’s resolution is to invest in as much art as possible with Masterworks. This $1 billion investing app founded by Princeton, Penn, and Harvard alumni lets you diversify your portfolio with multimillion-dollar paintings for a fraction of the cost.

But don’t wait. Their offerings can sell out quickly. Last week, I tried investing in their new $7.4M Banksy painting, but it sold out in less than three hours.
